There’s no better social network for professionals than LinkedIn. In addition to meeting new people and marketing yourself, you can find the best jobs and contacts to boost your career.
LinkedIn’s advanced search features are key to this. They let you filter through people, businesses, and opportunities, expanding your network and professional prospects.
What is LinkedIn Advanced Search?
We are not talking about any one particular device. An advanced search on LinkedIn means using the platform’s filtering options and technologies to find what you need more efficiently.
Whether you’re looking for your next job or want to join a group or community, on LinkedIn you can track down the best people. Just think of the right keywords and filters to apply to your advanced search.
1. Enter your search terms
On your LinkedIn dashboard, go to the search box, type in the career you’re interested in, and hit Enter. A new page will open with a mix of results related to your search term, from people and groups to jobs and courses.
On top of these, you’ll find LinkedIn’s advanced search filters. Some are obvious. For others, you need to delve deeper.
2. Choose a Standard or Advanced Filter
Your immediate search options are: Jobs, People, Posts, Groups, Courses, Programs, Products, Companies, Schools, Services. In addition, the “Filter All” feature allows you to apply more detailed filtering criteria.
Click on the tab you want, focusing on your clearest options, and it opens another page with more results and ways to narrow down your ideal job or contact.
3. Use all of LinkedIn’s filter tools
The All Filters tab gives you different options depending on which page you’re on, but there’s a trick. For example, if you’re on your preliminary results page, all filters provide additional job search options by default. The trick to the above is that you can choose which category filters you see.
To do this, click the button in the Filter Only ___ field and select your category from the dropdown menu. The panel will change and show you relevant advanced search filters for searching people, jobs, companies, etc. Add the filters you want and hit the Show Results button.
LinkedIn automatically switches to the category page and includes the filter you asked for. An easy way to get here is to select the category from your initial Advanced Search options and from that page use the All Filters tab. The relevant filters will already be there. All of this gives you a sense of just how active job searching on LinkedIn can be. But there is much more to learn.
4. Use a filter within a filter
In addition to your useful All Filter tool, you have other search options in each category page. If you click on the Companies tab, you can choose a specific location, industry, and company size.
The Jobs page comes with its own set of advanced filters. These include date posted, experience level, salary and easy application. Between these options and all the filters, there’s no doubt that LinkedIn can help you with your job networking. If not, make sure you have a few more tricks up your sleeve.
5. Refine Your Search with Boolean Logic
Learn how to use LinkedIn’s Boolean operators to make your search terms as precise as possible. You simply add quotes, parentheses, AND, NOT, and OR to your phrases. Your results will include or exclude the specified details.
You’ll find people, posts, companies and more that match your advanced search. Also use your filters to browse potential contacts and job opportunities more effectively.
6. Bookmark LinkedIn Queries
If the results are too many to get through in one go, or you want to check back later to see if anything new appears, be sure to bookmark the page. When you return, your queries and search results will be just as you left them—give or take a few changes. You can continue working without missing a single moment.
Build and maintain your LinkedIn job network
Of all the social media platforms, LinkedIn is best equipped for professionals. Its advanced search tools and tricks ensure that you can narrow down the contacts, jobs and content that best suits you.
But finding them is not enough. See if and how they can benefit your career or network. Stay in touch with people you admire. Share posts you love. Use LinkedIn actively for best results.
